Outdoor Farmers' Market

City Square Plaza

RFM News: June 23

We've had such beautiful weather for the market this season it's hard to believe that summer just officially started! We're ready for blue skies and summer sun, but it looks like we may have to wait as the weather forecast shows a 70% chance of rain for our first Saturday summer market. As you can see from the vendor list below there is still 100% certainty that you will find awesome local products at the Regina Farmers' Market.

In last Saturday's blog post we started a 4-part series that aims to turn the spotlight on local food. We talked about all of the healthy options and high-quality food that you'll find at our market. This week we're talking about Planet Earth.

Reason #2 to Eat Local: It's Good for the Environment

The tomatoes sold at The Regina Farmers' Market don't have passports. They don't need them because they aren't required to cross any borders on their trip to the market. That's because everything sold at our market is made, baked, grown, or designed in Saskatchewan.

Local food travels much less distance to get to your plate than food found in big-box grocery stores. That means using less fuel and generating fewer greenhouse gases. Those cookies from Chubby Chick Bakery? They aren't manufactured in a factory in the United States. They're baked in a home kitchen here in Regina with so much love and care. Hello, small carbon footprint!

The short distribution chain also means that less food gets wasted along the way in transportation, warehousing, and on display in retail locations. The radishes that were on Mitchell's All Natural Foods' table on Wednesday were picked by Don that morning at 5:00am. They went from in the soil on his farm near Moose Jaw directly to your mouth within a few hours. No extended warehouse stays for these crisp red orbs of delight.

At the Regina Farmers' Market, you'll find everything from okra to eggplants to apricots. Our farmers keep it interesting and love to grow new items for us all to enjoy. Local food producers encourage the diversification of local agriculture, which is good for the soil.

You'll find our market every Wednesday and Saturday from 9am-1pm on City Square Plaza during the summer. If you're coming out tomorrow don't forget your umbrella!

Canadian Multiculturalism Day Entertainment

The Saskatchewan Writers Guild is hosting an event in celebration of Canadian Multiculturalism Day on the City Square Plaza Stage during tomorrow's market.

The entertainment will include "storytelling, poetry, dance and music [that] will highlight and celebrate some of the diverse cultural voices in our province. Featuring readings by authors: Randy Lundy, Ven Begamudré, Iryn Tushabe, Ponzio Aluma, and a cultural performance by Karibu (a project of the Uganda Canadian Association of Saskatchewan)."

In the event of rain, the event will be moved to the RPL Film Theatre. We've got our fingers crossed for a couple hours of sunshine!
