Know Your Farmer - Part 2

Tomorrow's edition of Know Your Farmer will take place at 10 am (in person at the market AND live on Facebook Live!) and will feature Perry and Ledeen, the powerhouse duo behind Lipton SK-based Rocky Acres Orchard. Join us to learn more about their approach to Saskatchewan fruit production, preserving the harvest for year-round use, and pushing the boundaries of what is considered Saskatchewan product (Okra anyone?!).

Visitors to the market will also be able to sample their products, and folks who've collected their 20 Flok punches can redeem them for a free jar of Rocky Acres Orchard preserves (valued at $6).

If you missed the inaugural edition of Know Your Farmer last Saturday, do not despair! You can check out what Jeff of Peregrine Farm had to share about pasture raised chicken, honey, and regenerative farming at your convenience. Jeff also had the following PRO TIPS to share about how to make the most of your local food dollar by shopping in season and in bulk:

Honey: Jeff recommends buying liquid honey in bulk, as soon as possible after it's been harvested in summer, and divying it up into smaller jars to store in the freezer. Take out the jars as needed and let thaw! Not only will you avoid the normal (if irritating) phenomenon of honey crystallization, but you'll save money by buying in bulk!

Chicken: Jeff's recommendation for getting the most bang for your local meat buck? Order fresh chickens direct from your farmer in the summer. By cutting them up yourself before freezing, you can get the cuts you want AND save money by buying whole chickens in bulk! Check out Jeff giving a demonstration of how to properly cut up a whole fresh chicken.
