The Regina Farmers’ Market (RFM) is preparing to say farewell to its longest-standing vendor, Howland’s Honey, following their final market appearance on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. For nearly four decades, Howland’s Honey has been a beloved fixture at the farmers’ market, offering high-quality, locally produced honey that has earned a loyal following throughout much of Saskatchewan.

Founded in 1976 by Wink Howland, Howland’s Honey has been attending the Regina Farmers' Market since 1985, making it one of the market’s most enduring and iconic presences. What started as a small, family-run beekeeping operation has grown into a four-generation business. Wink passed on his passion for beekeeping to his daughter, Sasha Howland and her husband Danny Wasylenchuk, the current owners and operators of Howland's Honey. Today, even Sasha’s children help to carry on the family tradition.

For many, Howland’s Honey has become a household name. Although now exporting to many large businesses including Costco, much of their success is rooted in the deep connections that the Howland family has built with their customers over the years. Sasha fondly reflects on her father’s passion for farmers’ markets: “The RFM was truly my father's passion. As were markets in general… he built many connections with customers, market boards, and other vendors alike. He could always be recognized wearing his white pith helmet and a smile of greeting.”

Wink Howland, who played a key role in shaping the early years of the RFM as treasurer on the market’s board of directors, was also a strong advocate for the direct producer-to-consumer relationship. In a past interview with the Regina Leader-Post, Wink said: “I like people, and I have a chance to sell my honey directly to the consumer, and they are buying direct from the producer, so their quality assurance is right there. If you don’t like my honey, I’ll see you next week.”

This philosophy of personal connection continues to define Howland’s Honey today. Sasha and Dan, as well Wink's sister Lauri and brother-in-law Ross, have been attending the RFM since Wink's passing in 2011. As they prepare for their final market, Sasha, her husband, her aunt, & her uncle will be present on October 9 to celebrate their near 40-year journey with their loyal customers in the RFM community.

The legacy of Howland’s Honey, built on family tradition, quality products, and a strong community connection, will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the Regina Farmers’ Market and its customers for years to come. If you would like to learn more about Howland’s Honey, check out this award-winning 2018 documentary by SYMPIA member Bamboo Shoots.
