What’s in season RIGHT now (and where can I find it)?

Peppers – Hot, sweet, green, purple, red, and yellow! You name it, our farmers grown it. Start to keep an eye out for a rainbow of beautiful peppers at Rocky Acres Orchard (pictured here) and many of our other growers! PRO TIP: many of vendors, like Rocky Acres Orchard, transform them beautiful produce into delicious value-added products. In the case of peppers, be sure to try their hot sauces!

Garlic – Beautiful SK-grown garlic is here! Find it throughout the market. PRO-TIP: stored properly, garlic keeps all winter. Ask your farmer how best to store it, and buy in bulk!

Apricots – There’s more beautiful BC at every market. This week, visit Kim’s Fresh Fruit to try their fresh apricots.

Saskatoons – Saskatoon season is short, and some of our berry producers have already come and gone. But you’ll still find fresh Saskatoons at market this week – check out Loon Creek… and don’t forget to come early!

Customer Reward (July 31) – Absolute Zero

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! The RFM’s food truck fleet wouldn’t be complete without an ice cream truck – especially during those hot summer markets.

Owned by Matt Makush, Absolute Zero made their market debut in 2018 and have spent the past year supplying market-goers with frozen summer treat. In addition to ice cream, they also have artisanal ice pops, lemonade, and the fabled Prairie Cherry Sundae. Made with berries from Over the Hill Orchards (another RFM vendor), the classic ice cream dessert gets a Saskatchewan twist.

You can find Absolute Zero (the big blue truck) at many outdoor markets and all Summer Evening Markets! Plus, if you’ve collected 20+ RFM Customer Reward punches (powered by the Flok app), you can redeem them on Wednesday July 31 for a FREE Prairie Cherry Sundae!

Summer Evening Market Culinary Battle… RFM Style

Despite the wind and the rain, our first-ever RFM Culinary Battle went off without a hitch! Thanks to all the participants, judges Adam Mazer (Beer Brothers) and Bryce Hitchens (Legacy Catering), and to everyone that came out to watch the chefs in action.

In the end, MasterChef Canada finalist Chef Josh Miller (pictured above) took home the trophy, beating out Chef Roberto Flores de la Cruz (of El Tropezon) in a tight second round that featured three challenging secret ingredients: goat meat from JE Ranch (including steaks and bacon), beer from District Brewing Company, and kohlrabi from Lincoln Gardens.

Chef Roberto made it to the second round by beating out Chef Mariana Brito (of Malinche) in a battle featuring wild boar cubes from Golden Prairie Wild Boar, award-winning oaked gin from Black Fox Farm & Distillery, and Saskatoon berries from Loon Creek.

All three chefs were unfazed by the pressures presented by secret ingredients, the weather, and a short 45-minutes timeframe, and created delicious and beautiful dishes. We had so much fun, and can’t wait to do it again!

Customer Reward (August 1) – The Cookie Lady

Of all the recognizable sights at market, there are probably none more well-known than the table full of brightly-coloured cookies; each package adorned with that familiar smiley face sticker. Need some green and white treats for your next game day party? She’s got ‘em. Unicorn cookies for a rainbow cake? Yep. Or maybe it’s a pie you’re after. The Cookie Lady has something for everyone!

Laurie Kitsch (aka The Cookie Lady) has been a vendor with the RFM for 25 years, and has become a favourite for folks of all ages. Not only does her market table have cookies and pies, but it also includes brownies, cheesecake and donuts. (PRO-TIP: look for extra special treats at Summer Evening Markets, like the Matcha Cheesecake with Lavender Honey pictured above!) Pie fillings and cheesecake toppings are made with fresh fruit (when in season) from other RFM vendors. During the holiday season pecan pies and turtle tarts are also added to the baking roster.

You can find The Cookie Lady at all outdoor markets this season – rain or shine, she or partner Gleen (aka The Cookie Man) be there with a smile! Plus, if you’ve collected 20+ RFM Customer Reward punches (powered by the Flok app), you can redeem them at Summer Evening Market on August 1for a FREE package of football themed cookies to get you into the game-day spirit!

Summer Evening Market – August 1

Incredibly, we are halfway through our Summer Evening Market series! We are on the Plaza every Thursday (4-9 pm) until the end of August, so please come down and join us for a relaxing evening of local food, drinks, live music, salsa dancing, and yoga in the park! Our schedule this week:

4-9 pm: Local food and shopping; beer, wine, and cocktails in our licensed area, sponsored by District Brewing Company

5-7 pm: Live music by Resonance, featuring the vocals of Christie-Anne Blondeau and Fred Foerster on acoustic bass. Guaranteed to surprise and delight with their interpretations of jazz, pop and soul music with a twist.

7-8 pm: Yoga in the Park by Zenhouse productions (donation $5)

7-9 pm: Salsa lessons and dancing by Regina Salseros.

Customer Reward (August 3) – Karachi Foods

We love that our RFM vendor community has been able to reflect the growing diversity of our Regina community. Earlier this year, we welcomed Karachi Foods to the RFM, and they’ve become a delicious addition with their kebabs.

Kebabs are various cooked meat dishes, originating in Middle Eastern cuisine with many variations popular around the world. Kebabs are often cooked on a skewer, but many types are prepared in other ways. Karachi Foods’ kebabs are like a hamburger patty in shape and make a delicious snack or meal. Owned by Sumaira Atif, Karachi Foods is 100% Halal. Plus, if you’ve collected 20+ RFM Customer Reward punches (powered by the Flok app), you can redeem them on Saturday August 3 for 50% off your purchase!

Pop Up: Studio 144 Clay Collective

This Wednesday we’ll be welcoming clay collective Studio 144 (pictured above) for a special RFM pop up featuring ceramics by Saskatchewan artists. If you don’t catch them this week, look for them again on September 7 and 14.
