Footprints Commemorative Indigenous Art Project

This Saturday, August 14, the Regina Downtown BID, Warehouse BID, and the Regina Farmers’ Market are hosting the collaborative Footprints Commemorative Indigenous Art Project to commemorate the individuals found in unmarked graves on residential school sites in Saskatchewan. As a community, we are coming together for an elder-lead ceremony, and to stencil footprints designed by local, indigenous artists onto sidewalks and vacant storefront windows in both Regina Downtown and Warehouse Business District.

The purpose is threefold:

  1. To commemorate the 1053 individuals found in unmarked graves on residential school sites in Saskatchewan
  2. To raise awareness of the impact of Canada’s residential schools
  3. To add support to those affected by them

Saturday, August 14:

  • 11am – 1pm: Honour Ceremony, Cree prayers, speeches by dignitaries, and powwow dancing
  • The Morning + Afternoon: Community comes together with volunteers to begin stenciling the indigenous-designed footprints onto the sidewalks.
  • The ceremony will be taking place during the Regina Farmers’ Market (which will operate as usual), and the RFM has dedicated sponsored space for Indigenous artisans who want to attend the event.
