Street Beets July 31st, 2015: Peppers, People and REACH Contest!
These are really large jalapeño peppers from Rocky Acres Orchard. Notice the glossy and smooth skins. They are just beautiful! Jalapeños are a medium-sized chili pepper pod type cultivar of the species Capsicum annuum. It is of mild to medium pungency, 2,500 and 10,000 Scoville units in general. I used to think it was the seeds that are strong, it turns out it is the membrane around the seeds that is the most potent part. It is the most popular cooking pepper due to it's milder kick, good size, and easy ability to grow. Ledeen sets aside some of these to dry and grind into her ground hot peppers available in the fall and winter. So many ways to use these!
People of the Market: This is my little friend Aveline. She was enjoying a Chocolate BC Cherry donut at The Cookie Lady Tasting Booth! Market under the Stars brings out some awesome food ideas! Aveline really enjoyed this taste. She says it all with that chocolatey face, "THAT'S YUMMY!". Thanks for bringing her to visit Dianne!
I hope you have heard of a wonderful organization in our community called REACH. This stands for Regina Education and Action on Child Hunger. They operate on the strong belief that every Regina citizen has a right to safe, nutritious, culturally appropriate and affordable food, and the opportunity to obtain it through non-emergency sources. They offer a variety of programming to achieve this goal: Good Food Box, The Family Basket, Convenience Meals, Senior Mobile Stores, Bulk Food Buying Co-operative, R Healthy Neighbourhood Stores, and Community Kitchens/What's Cooking/Kids Cooking. They distribute over $750,000 worth of food to over 2500 families and 7000 children through the Children Nutrition Program. They have been attending Market as they are running a huge contest with some major prizes so they can continue their programming. Some of the prizes are a WestJet Trip for two, School Haus Culinary Cooking Classes paired with wine and food gift cards, a year of dining for two at Regina's Best Restaurants. These are some serious foodie prizes. The prizes are worth over $6000! Please visit their booth and buya ticket for their draw or make a donation to this valuable organization in Regina!
