What’s in season RIGHT NOW (and where can I find it)?

It's Popeye's favourite time of year--the spinach is here! Find this nutritional powerhouse making an appearance at the booths of several of our local growers this week.

Here are some other fresh, Saskatchewan-grown vegetables to keep an eye out for this week:

Wednesday and Saturday

Floating Gardens- mini cucumbers, cocktail tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs

Kangro Gardens- cucumbers (mini, nokya), swiss chard, and HUGE basil plants

Saturday Only

Heliotrope Organic Farm- lettuce, spinach, green onions, and if the frost didn't get it--some of the first asparagus this year!

Kaleidoscope Vegetable Gardens- scallions, radishes, beet greens, spinach

Southland Colony- cellar clear out!

Waldeck Colony- carrots, beets, potatoes

Eggs!

More hours of daylight brings an abundance of eggs. You just can't beat a farm-fresh-laid-this-morning egg. Well actually, you can beat it! Or fry it. Or poach it. Or hard-boil it. Find nutritious, delicious eggs at JE Ranch (Wednesday and Saturday), The Scandinavian Sweethearts (Saturday only), Cobblestone Farm (Saturday only), and Miller's By-Gone Farm (Saturday only).

Cobblestone Farm

Fire up that BBQ because Cobblestone Farm will be starting at the RFM this Saturday! Joanna and Carl are originally from the UK but they now call Saskatchewan home. From their farm near Imperial, SK they raise a rare breed of pig called Berkshires on their pasture. Berkshire pork is famed for its delicious and unique flavour. We can attest--their products are truly scrumptious! Cobblestone Farm will be bringing some familiar items like bacon, sausages, ribs, and roasts but also a few British specialities like Cumberland Sausage and Gammon (an English cured ham). Find Cobblestone Farm on City Square Plaza starting this Saturday (and a few Saturdays after that)!

Welcome, Joanna and Carl! We're thrilled to have you along this season!

First markets of 2019

Southland Colony will be joining us for their very first market of 2019! Find them on the west end of the Plaza with bags and bags of beautiful Saskatchewan-grown vegetables that have been safely stored safely in their cellars since the fall harvest! Carrots that have spent some time in the cellar seem to get sweeter with age--try some tomorrow and see for yourself!

Popping Up at the RFM

We'll see another new/old face popping up on the Plaza--Martha's Garden! You may remember Michelle's unique (and rare) heirloom vegetables and plants as she attended the RFM in 2015-16. We're excited to welcome her back to the RFM this Saturday, May 25th (weather permitting--her plant babies hate the wind!). She'll be bringing a wide variety of gorgeous garden plants, seeds, and accessories.

Insider Tip

This week we asked one of the RFM staff members, Kerri, to give us her market-insider recommendation. Needless to say, with so many great products available she had a really hard time narrowing it down! In the end, Kerri chose totopos (homemade tortilla chips) from El Tropezon. "They're just so crunchy and satisfying! Add a bowl of their salsa verde on the side and you've got yourself the perfect snack!" she said. It's safe to say that Kerri is not alone in her praise for El Tropezon's products as they won RFM People's Choice in 2018.

Have you met Roberto and Valeria of El Tropezon? If you’ve ever attended a Plaza market in the summer and heard the fast-paced, upbeat sounds of salsa music, chances are it led you to the El Tropezon food truck. An RFM staple, El Tropezon has been serving up authentic Mexican dishes to Saskatchewan locals for the past three years.

El Tropezon is the Flores' labour of love and their desire to bring a little bit of Mexico to the prairies. They offer a variety of fresh and frozen dishes crafted from traditional and family recipes, including chorizo and tamales passed down from Roberto’s great-grandmother (when it comes from abuela, you know it’s good!).

During food truck season, you’ll find classic Mexican street food at the El Tropezon truck, including tacos, tamales, and chilaquiles. When not in the truck, Roberto and Valeria can be found in a booth at the RFM with all kinds of goodies already prepped for you to take home. At their booth you’ll find totopos, tamales, chorizo, and salsa, to name a few. Vegan tamales and chorizo are also available.

But wait; there's more! If you've collected 20 Flok punches you can redeem them this Wednesday, May 22 for an absolutely free jar of salsa to go with those crunchy totopos! Does it get any better than that? We think not.

You'll find El Tropzeon and all of their Mexican flair at most markets this season!
